hOW STORAGE HAS CHANGED

According to the Self Storage Association there are more than 1000 facilities across the United Kingdom, providing in excess of 37 million square feet of storage space to thousands of customers.

Households are increasingly turning to self storage due to social factors such as moving home, marriage, divorce and retirement.

Explaining the history surrounding self storage is an effective way to help understand what options are available for you to choose from.

Humble beginnings...

Storage has been around for nearly 60 years, first originating in the USA in the 1960's.

This concept arrived in the United Kingdom during the early 1980's, with removal companies offering to store customer's good in large wooden crates.  These crates would then be stacked away in a warehouse and only accessible by appointment or when they came out of storage.

developing the industry...

The dated image of self storage is one of hundreds of large steel industrial containers, side by side in a field somewhere.

Although times have changed, shipping containers are still offered as storage solutions - Albeit cheap and potentially damaging!

More modern storage facilities, such as First Base Self Storage, consist of purpose built steel partitioned rooms of many different sizes.
